CALL FOR ENTRIES: 10th Annual Photo Contest Now Open

Lewisburg, PA – Grab your phone or your camera and hit us with your best shot in the 10th Annual Susquehanna Greenway Photo Contest: Treasured Towns and Landscapes of the Susquehanna.

This free-to-enter photo contest offers individuals of all ages and ability levels the opportunity to go outside, explore, and capture—via photography—the many landscapes, resources, and towns along the Susquehanna Greenway.

Cash Prizes will be awarded to the first through third place winners within each category: River Towns, Landscapes, Susquehanna Adventures, and Wildlife. Winning images will also be printed, framed, and added to a traveling gallery to be exhibited throughout the Susquehanna region within Pennsylvania.

“SGP seeks to inspire and celebrate the connections that are shared between our communities and the Susquehanna River,” says SGP Executive Director Corey Ellison. “Our annual photo contest provides one way of fostering this connection by encouraging people to get out on the Greenway and explore the Susquehanna through a camera lens.”

The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2021. Eligible participants can visit susquehannagreenway.org/photocontest to learn more and submit photographs in one or all four categories. Entries must be submitted electronically through the SGP portal and in accordance with contest guidelines.

SGP also celebrates the winning photos at an annual wine and gallery reception called Susquehanna Scenes and Sips. This year, both the 8th and 9th annual winners will be recognized during Susquehanna Scenes, Sips, and Scales at Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland on Friday, May 7, 6-8 PM. Guests are invited to enjoy a walk through the interactive zoo exhibits, sip wines from three local PA wineries, and view the winning images from the contest’s previous years. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at susquehannagreenway.org/scales.
The Susquehanna Greenway is a corridor of connected trails, parks, river access points, and communities, linking people to the natural and cultural treasures of the Susquehanna River. The mission of the Partnership is to continue to grow the Greenway, inspiring people to engage with the outdoors and transforming communities into places where people want to live, work, and explore.

Downtown Bloomsburg, Inc. will put up a fifteen-foot holiday tree in front of the Bloomsburg Diner this holiday season, and it needs a topper: DBI seeks an appropriate custom-made tree-topper and seeks proposals from regional artists.

We would like something interesting and beautiful; beyond that, we leave it up to you. We have a budget of $250, and the chosen artwork will get used for years and years: Your artwork can become part of a Bloomsburg tradition, so you must work in permanent materials. For the size of the tree, the topper should measure 18-24″ tall and have an easy means to mount it to the trunk (a weather-proof pipe or dowel two feet long). The topper does not need to have built-in lighting (but we will accept designs that do).

Please e-mail your design, in jpgs or pdfs, to [email protected] and [email protected], with a deadline of Monday, November 2nd. We will let you know if we have chosen your design by Friday, the 6th, and we will need the finished work by Monday, November 30th, with payment after delivery.

We look forward to your designs!

Coming soon: “Mask & Carry”
Work due Saturday, November 21st, 2020
Show runs November 23rd, 2020, through January 8th, 2021
Reception TBA

For this year’s holiday fundraiser show, The Exchange masks up!

Since 2014, The Exchange has hosted a year-end art exhibition called “Cash & Carry”: We gave away wooden panels for artists to make art on, and we sold every piece for the same price.

This year, we will give away plain white 100%-cotton face masks for a “Mask & Carry” exhibition. As always, artists can make any sort of artwork on them – painting, drawing, sewing, collaging, sculpting, tie-dyeing, any medium at all. All of the finished pieces will go on display at the Exchange Gallery starting Saturday, November 21st, and the “Mask & Carry” exhibition will run through the 8th of January, 2021.

All of the masks in the show will go on view at an e-commerce site so buyers can browse and purchase on the Web; we will have that link out to you when the show opens and sales begin. All pieces will also go up on the ArtOfPA.org Instagram page.

In this year that the COVID crisis has affected everything that The Exchange does, as it has affected every person reading this, we make a special request of our artists: We ask all of you to do your work on your masks as donations to The Exchange; that way, all of the proceeds will go directly to keeping our lights on and into the programming that brings the arts to all communities throughout our region – the Gallery, the Art Cart, the Listening Room, and more. Your donations in this show will help ensure that we can continue to keep such a low commission, 20%, in all of our other shows. We thank you in advance for your generosity.

Artists may also start from scratch and enter masks of their own design, of any size at all (as long as they fit through the front door) and constructed of any material, substance, or matter. These artists also agree to donate all of the proceeds to The Exchange – which we will appreciate immensely!
Because all of the masks in the show will have become artwork, The Exchange does NOT recommend wearing any of them as protective gear – but one certainly may at a proper physical distance in any situation where one would not need a mask.

You may pick up your mask to work on at The Exchange during our regular open hours (exchangearts.org/calendar).

The Exchange turned ten years old in 2020, and we had intended to celebrate all year long, with concerts at venues throughout Columbia and Montour Counties as well as our Gallery shows, some of which hearkened back to themes that we had solicited work on in the past – thus our third “Nest” and “Cover of a Cover” exhibitions. The first six annual “Cash & Carry” shows have attracted as many as 521 pieces in each, with the artists representing a broad and deep cross-section of the people in our community, from university art professors to preschool children and everyone in between. We look forward to just as diverse a group of artists in “Mask & Carry”.

For more information about The Exchange and our ongoing “Listening Room” concert series, sponsored in part by Downtown Bloomsburg, Inc., visit ExchangeArts.org. For information about arts events and opportunities throughout our region, visit ArtOfPA.org.

The dictionary defines it thus:

dop·pel·gäng·er — /ˈdäpəlˌɡaNGər/, noun — an apparition or double of a living person

What does “doppelganger” mean to YOU?  We want to see your artwork: As always, all interpretations in all media accepted — 2-D, 3-D, video, installation, etc.

Artwork on the banner above by Central Columbia High School students Rylee Granville and Stefen Antonopoulos for the 2018 Halloween Window Painting in Bloomsburg, an annual tradition going back half a century in which middle- and high-school students decorate storefront windows on Main Street — including, the past six years, at The Exchange.
