As part of its mission of bringing the arts to all communities throughout our region and of supporting artists throughout their careers, The Exchange has partnered with a Bloomsburg University professor to create an annual award given to a Bloom U. student who has taken the initiative to enter work in Exchange Gallery shows. By building a resumé while also supporting a local non-profit organization’s programs, the winning student demonstrates promise of building a life in art and as a community member.
The first award goes to Jacob Ulicny, a Studio Art major from Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania. The Exchange’s executive director, Oren B. Helbok, presented the $200 check during one of Jacob’s art classes at the University on Wednesday, April 24.
Chad Andrews, Assistant Professor of printmaking, has had a long association with The Exchange, serving on its board 2011-2016 and founding the Exchange Gallery. Chad proposed the idea of the award to Oren, who responded with enthusiasm. “The Exchange owes its ongoing success to collaboration like this,” says Oren. “By specifically celebrating students who engage with our programming, we highlight the importance of the multifaceted relationship between Bloomsburg University and our whole community.”
Jacob made a natural choice for this year’s award: He has entered work in Exchange Gallery shows since his freshman year, and he has impressed his professors with his activity in the life of the Art Department. Department chairperson Vince Hron says “I’m glad that he takes initiative, participates, and shares his work with the community.” Chad calls Jacob “one of our highly-engaged students.” Now in his junior year, Jacob has a Graphic design concentration and won the award for “Most Avant Garde” in the recent Personal Adornment Day & Makeup Extravaganza (PADME) event on campus.
The Exchange Gallery is located at 24 East Main Street, Bloomsburg, surrounded by convenient parking (free after 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and all day Sunday).
