Irrational Beauty: With its SURREALISM show, The Milton Art Bank delivers an immersive experience that takes viewers beyond the art history books, in a notable new exhibition opening this November.
The Milton Art Bank (MAB) is set to unveil an extraordinary catalog of work by internationally renowned Surrealist artists in a large exhibition that will run November 1, 2018 – February 24, 2019.
SURREALISM at MAB features a survey of European and American Surrealist works of the period from important international private collections. The exhibition will include painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, limited art editions as well as books, films, music, and ephemera such as magazines and letters. Also on view in the bank vault is a classic Surrealist Kunstkabinett (cabinet of curiosities) filled with oddities and antiques from around the globe.
Educational programming with acclaimed art critics, historians, and artists from New York City will be planned throughout the life of the exhibition at MAB. The SURREALISM show is free and open to the public and all are encouraged to visit, especially art/art history students of all ages.
The SURREALISM exhibition’s special residency at the Milton Art Bank (Milton, PA) over these four months reinforces MAB’s role as a creative catalyst for the evolution of Milton, bringing a unique collection of art, music, performance, and culture never before experienced in Central Pennsylvania.
This unprecedented exhibition will feature the works of famous Surrealists Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, and Max Ernst, among many others – historically important works previously kept inside the walls of museums and private collections until now.
SURREALISM at MAB is being presented in conjunction with Bucknell University’s hosting of the inaugural conference of International Society of Surrealist Scholars (November 1-4, 2018) in Lewisburg, PA.
Surrealism is a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind. Its intention was to allow the viewer to experience art in its purest form, using techniques such as the irrational juxtaposition of images to tap into the imagination, rather than rational thought.
